Thank You to Our Dedicated Volunteers and Those Who Donated Materials

This past Saturday, February 13, your Home Builders Association of Greenville stepped out to help Habit for Humanity rehabilitate and weatherize a family's home in Greer. With the help of donations from our members and volunteers from our Community Service Committee, we were able to complete the project despite the cold weather.
Thank you to Gateway Supply for donating the plumbing trim out needed for the bathroom and kitchen; thank you to Davis Services for taking care of the HVAC system; thank you to STEAMATIC of Greenville for taking care of the carpet and vinyl floor cleaning; and thank you to Tuck Williams of HomeWorks for taking care of pressure washing the siding and driveway.

Jon Statom of Palmetto Exterminators works with his son on interior projects like painting, adjusting doors, and installing some of the plumbing trim out that was donated by Gateway Supply.

Tuck Williams of HomeWorks works with other volunteers to cut trim, measure, and install newly weatherized exterior and interior doors.

The Ground Hog may have predicted 6 more weeks of winter but at Tuesday's annual Housing Market Forecast Luncheon predictions were more favorable.

Your HBA, SMC of the Upstate, Greater Greenville Association of Realtors (GGAR), and Upstate Mortgage Lenders Association (affiliate of MBAC) held The Housing Market Forecast Luncheon at TD Convention Center on Tuesday, February 3rd featuring Dr. David Crowe, Chief Economist for NAHB. Dr Crowe brought some very valuable information catering to our unique and growing area. Including this: Crowe predicted that single-family housing starts in the Greenville metro area would grow 17 percent this year, to 3,392. Crowe also mentioned that while Greenville's housing market still isn't back to normal following the Great Recession, it should get there over the next two years.

Dr. David Crowe is Chief Economist and Senior Vice President at the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB). Dr. Crowe is responsible for NAHB's forecast of housing and economic trends, survey research and analysis of the home building industry and consumer preferences as well as micro economic analysis of government policies that affect housing. HBA Community Service Committee Helps Habitat Renovate a Home

HBA and Habitat for Humanity representatives visit the site of the latest renovation project

Your Home Builders Association's Community Service Committee is helping Habitat for Humanity renovate a home in Taylors that will soon be owned by a new, deserving family.  This is the third Habitat house renovated by the HBA in the last year.

The HBA of Greenville would like to thank the Community Service Committee for their hard work this past weekend on a recently acquired Habitat for Humanity home. The volunteer group included Eddie Howard of Howard Custom Builders, John Wolfrom of Providence Realty, Jon Statom of Palmetto Exterminators, and Amy Torlay of Hughes Supply. They painted the interior of the home, replaced the back deck, and also replaced windows along with many other smaller projects. The committee has also received gifts in kind to complete this home and get the family into the home by the end of summer. Some of those gifts in kind include a new roof furnished by Allcon Roofing, new plumbing and fixtures provided by Hughes Supply, and Crawlspace Incapsulation provided by Palmetto Exterminators. However, we are still in need of several other items!

HBA of Greenville represented at 2013 Youth Conference

This past Wednesday your HBA of Greenville was at the 2013 Youth Conference- Job/ Resource Fair inspiring and encouraging students to take a look at careers in the Home Building industry. This event was staffed by the Community Service Committee and held at McAlister Square. Hosted by SC Works Greenville & Personal Pathways to Success and featured employers from top companies in many industries. The goal of this job fair was to give at risk youth between the ages of 17-24 opportunities to speak with potential employers and find more information on a career that interests them - even apply for jobs. This type of event goes hand in hand with efforts on behalf of the HBA of Greenville and others in our area to improve workforce development. The workforce development initiative was started to get job seekers and students interested in all the many career opportunities  available with fair pay and in a stable job place where they can make a living and grow their career in a skilled trade. Many of the jobs highlighted in the workforce development initiative do not require a college degree, however some may require a trade school certificate or license.
We would like to thank Jon Statom of Palmetto Exterminators and Eddie Howard of Howard Custom Builders for taking the time out of their busy day to talk to the participants and help out with this event.

EPA set to impose new rules for termite pretreatments

Did you know that the Federal Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is finalizing new use direction changes for pyrethroid-class insecticides, the chemical commonly used in termite treatment applications in homes? These proposed guidelines have been commonly followed by the industry, but now the EPA is planning to require that they be followed.

Below are the new EPA regulations that will be imposed when a pyrethroid-class insecticide is used in a new construction pretreatment:

• The treatment site must be covered prior to a rain event in order to prevent run-off of the pesticide into non-target areas. 
• The applicator must either cover the soil him/herself or provide written notification of the above requirement to the contractor on site and to the person commissioning the application (if different than the contractor). If notice is provided to the contractor or the person commissioning the application, then they are responsible under FIFRA (the law that governs pesticide use) to insure that: 

1. if the concrete slab cannot be poured over the treated soil within 24 hours of application 
2. the treated soil must be covered with a waterproof covering (such as polyethylene sheeting) 
3. the treated soil must be covered if precipitation is predicted to occur before the concrete slab is scheduled to be poured. 

• Do not treat soil that is water-saturated or frozen. 
• Do not treat when rain is falling. 
• Do not allow treatment to run off from the target area. 
• Do not apply within 10 feet of storm drains. 
• Do not apply within 25 feet of aquatic habitats (such as, but not limited to, lakes, reservoirs, rivers, permanent streams, marshes or ponds, estuaries, and commercial fish farm ponds). 
• Do not make on-grade applications when sustained wind speeds are above 10 mph (at application site) at nozzle end height. 

Home Builders, if you currently use the soil treatment method for termite control, your pest control operator should be advising you of these rule changes.
