Appeal for volunteers:
The Southern Home and Garden Show needs you!  Twice a year, the Home Builders Association of Greenville interacts with the public, face-to-face, as producer of the Southern Home and Garden Show.  We need your help to make the Home Show a success.

Volunteers are needed to work at the Approved Professional Builder booth, the lobby Exhibitor Registration and Will-Call area, and to help us keep the Exhibitor Lounge stocked with snacks and water.

We are seeking volunteers for two-hour shifts on the show days of Friday, September 15, Saturday, September 16, and Sunday, September 17.

Member tickets:
HBA of Greenville members receive two tickets to the Southern Home and Garden Show compliments of the Home Show Committee members.  Simply go to the Will-Call counter outside the show entrance.  Your tickets will be waiting for you. 

Volunteer with your HBA and Rebuild Upstate partner to help a 78-year old widow

Your Home Builders Association and Rebuild Upstate will team up later this month to repair a deck that is the primary entrance for a 78-year-old widow in Easley.  Please consider volunteering.

Needed are 8-10 volunteers to perform the work.  Andrew Woodford of ABW Construction will supervise the project.

• Saturday, September 30
• 8:30 a.m. until 4 p.m.

Volunteers should wear closed-toe shoes and dress appropriately to perform construction work.  The HBA will provide lunch and have water and sodas on hand.

Last weekend your Home Builders Association of Greenville held its ninth Fall Southern Home and Garden Show at the TD Convention Center for nearly 5,000 visitors. With such a big show, we were in need of volunteers, and our members stepped up to help.

Home Works is Looking for Volunteers to Help Columbia Flood Victims

Home Works of America has announced a task force that will act in December to help repair the homes of flood victims in Columbia. They need volunteers to help supervise the work. Please see their press release with more details below:

December 28-30 - In response to the historic flooding in October 2015, Home Works of America in partnership with the Building Industry Association and St. Bernard Project has repurposed the December home repair session and will designate all efforts to address the needs of flood victims who have not received help. Volunteers needed for supervision of job sites and preliminary assessments and repair of mechanical systems of selected homes. For more information click here or contact R.B. More than $110,000 has been donated by individuals, corporations, and foundations - which will be used to offset materials/supplies and direct costs for these repairs.

Habitat for Humanity and HBA Partner to Help Greer Family

On February 13, the HBA of Greenville and Habitat for Humanity of Greenville need your help! Your HBA has partnered with Habitat of Greenville to rehabilitate and weatherize a family's home in Greer. With donations and volunteers from HBA of Greenville members, we can knock this project out in a day or two. Some of the materials needed include doors, a mail box, kitchen appliances, and carpet. Meals on Wheels Needs Volunteers and Substitutes

Meals on Wheels is looking for more volunteers to deliver meals to the senior community in the Greater Greenville Area. If you are interested in participating, you can get involved through the HBA. Our members on the Community Service Committee have formed a team that drives a route every week, delivering hot meals to those in need.

Come to our Committee Interest Meeting on Thursday at 4:30 at the HBA office if you would like to hear about more opportunities with the Community Service Committee as well as the other committees within the HBA. We will give a brief description of each committee's purpose and hear from some of the chairs. To see a list of our current committees, click here.

"We are incredibly grateful for our volunteers who come day in and day out to deliver meals to our clients, rain or shine. However we understand life happens and substitutes are needed to fill in last minute. If you are a regular volunteer, please do your best to find someone who can take your route for you. If they've never delivered with you before, we are happy to walk them through it so they feel comfortable!

And consider being a substitute! Each Thursday we send out an email with open route for the following week...simply reply based on your schedule and help us out. You can take your regular route or try something new! Email vvanvick@mowgvl.org to get added to the list!"

Members who would like to travel to Columbia to provide relief efforts directly to those suffering, please meet at Trenholm Road Methodist Church as they are coordinating with the families in greatest need. Any materials or trailers would be greatly appreciated. We are grateful for all of your help, and ask that you use caution when helping clean up after such a natural disaster. Please consult this document  which contains safety tips for the clean-up procedure in Columbia.

Members have been asking me how they can help in Columbia and Charleston.  I have been in contact with my counterparts in both places and both are still assessing needs.  Charleston has experienced flooding like this before, and they seem to have a handle on their situation.  Our staff is helping them with public relations needs and they told me they would let me know what they need in terms of labor in a couple of days.

In Columbia, the obvious and immediate need is drinking water.  The Hilton Head HBA has organized a large shipment of water to the Columbia HBA for the members there.  And the Greater Greenville Association of Realtors is organizing a water caravan for Thursday.  If you would like to join that trip, or donate, please let me know and I will put you in touch with the Realtors Association.

In Columbia especially there are several HBA members and family who have been directly and tragically impacted by the flooding.  I know of several who have been evacuated from their homes, which are under water.  They are going to need a lot of help in terms of labor, material, and money.  I am working on the best route to handle money, so please standby on making a financial donation that would go directly to an HBA member in need.  

If you would like to donate your time, or your crews' time, to travel to Columbia, please contact me.  I will work with the HBA in Columbia to match you up with members in need.  I will even act as a guide to help get you to the proper address.

And if you can donate materials, I would like to match you up with the members who want to travel to Columbia to volunteer.  

The HBA is a family, and our family members in Columbia, in particular, have some significant needs.  I was in Columbia for two days this past weekend, very near to the worst of the disaster along Gills Creek.  The pictures do not do it justice.  What happened there is tragic.  Two entire cities, Forest Acres and Acadia Lakes, are literally under water.  The recovery is going to be time and labor intensive.  If you can help, please volunteer.  I think the immediate need will be clean up and demolition.  Long term the Columbia HBA has let me know that they are going to need qualified trades to come in and help. 

Let's help them out.  Please let me know what you can do, and when.

Volunteers Needed for the Upcoming Southern Home & Garden Show

Volunteers make your Home Builders Association’s programs and services possible and the Southern Home and Garden Show, held September 27-29, is no exception! Our volunteers help us drive the parking lot shuttles, assist exhibitors and volunteers at the Exhibitor Registration and Will Call Desk, stock the Exhibitor Hospitality Lounge, and visit and thank all of our exhibitors.

Meals on Wheels News

Did you know that the HBA of Greenville has been a partner with Meals on Wheels since 1971? The HBA's relationship with Meals on Wheels was started by the HBA's Womens' Auxiliary, a group organized primarily by the wives of the Home Builders at that time. Since 1971 the HBA has supported Meals on Wheels with contributions and by sponsoring one and sometimes multiple routes.

Today the HBA continues to sponsor a route each Tuesday. Our regular volunteers are:

Think you may want to help out? Our volunteers generally take the route about once every four to six weeks. It takes about two to three hours to pick up the meals at the Meals on Wheels office and distribute them to about 10 grateful recipients. If you are new to Meals on Wheels, you will need to participate in a short orientation session.

If you are willing to help the HBA with the Meals on Wheels route, please click here and indicate the dates you think you can take a route. Simply type in your name and select the date or dates that you can volunteer for the route. We are currently scheduling the route from June through August.
