Did You Know: Subcontractors perform 75 percent of the work in a typical new home

Did you know that 70 percent of contractors use between 11 and 30 subcontractors to build a single-family home?  The median is 20, and the average is 22.

The top trades, with more than 90 percent of contractors reporting that they subcontract the work to another company:

• Security System, 97 percent
• Carpeting, 96 percent
• HVAC, 96 percent
• Electrical wiring, 96 percent
• Plumbing, 95 percent
• Technology, 95 percent
• Fireplace, 95 percent
• Foundation, 94 percent
• Drywall, 93 percent
• Masonry work, 92 percent
• Concrete flat work, 92 percent

According to the report, two thirds of contractors report contracting out 75 percent of the construction cost of the typical single-family home.
