Builder Ballot: Tomorrow is Election Day

Today is the big day: Election Day.

Your Home Builders Association has formed two Political Action Committees that raise money from our members, screens candidates, and make contributions to the campaigns of the candidates that our Government Affairs Committee members and Board of Directors have determined will represent the interests of the Home Building, Remodeling, Land Development, and Light Commercial Contracting industries.

"A few years ago a few Home Builders in Dorchester County (Summerville) thought their vote did not matter," Michael Dey, Executive Vice President of the Home Builders Association, said. "The chairman of Dorchester County Council, a member of the Home Builders Association, lost by just four votes," Dey said. "He was replaced by a politician hostile to the interests of Home Builders, and the next four years were very difficult for that association," he said. "The association knew of several members, who lived in the county, who did not vote in that election." Yes, your vote does matter.

The HBA of SC Will Host a Spec Financing Workshop

The Home Builders Association of South Carolina will host a Spec Financing Workshop at 4:00 p.m. before their 46th Bird Supper at 6:30 p.m., both taking place at Seawells.

Your Home Builders Association of Greenville cooperates with the Home Builders of South Carolina to raise and contribute funds to candidates for elected offices in South Carolina through the South Carolina Builders PAC. Eighty percent of the funds we raise in Greenville, Pickens, and Laurens counties for S.C. Builders PAC are directed by the HBA of Greenville for local and legislative races in our area. The remaining 20 percent is used for statewide races like Governor and Attorney General and directed by a board of trustees.  Immediate Past President Rick Quinn serves as the Chairman of the SC Builders PAC Board of Trustees and represents your Home Builders Association on the board of trustees.

In addition, your HBA of Greenville assists NAHB in raising funds for BuildPAC. All of the funds raised for BuildPAC are used for Federal races.

Rick Quinn elected Chairman of SC Builders PAC

Rick Quinn, 2013 President of HBA of Greenville and President of Quinn-Satterfield, was elected statewide Chairman of S.C. Builders Political Action Committee (PAC).

S.C. Builder PAC is a cooperative committee administered by the Home Builders Association of South Carolina.  The purpose of the PAC is to raise money from HBA members to support candidates for office who understand and support the interests and agenda of South Carolina's Home Builders.  For each dollar raised for the PAC, 20 cents is used to support candidates for statewide office, like Governor, and for other committees and caucuses.  The balance of the money is held in local funds for each participating HBA and used for local and legislative races.  The PAC is governed by a Board of Trustees, of which Quinn is chairman.  However, all local funds are directed by the local association.  The HBA of Greenville's local fund is directed by the HBA of Greenville Board of Directors with the advice of the Legislative Committee.

Quinn has been a Home Builder, developer, and real estate professional for more than 30 years.  He has served on the HBA of Greenville Board of Directors since 2008, was Legislative Chairman in 2011-2012, served on the HBASC Legislative Committee since 2011, and has been the PAC Trustee from Greenville since 2011.  Quinn was named HBA of Greenville Builder of the Year in 2008.

HBA of Greenville recognizes the Political Action Committee (PAC) Donations

With the elections around the corner and all hype surrounding it. The HBA of Greenville would like to thank the members who contributed at the donor level and higher to the Political Action Committee. Silver Hammer donors are Graham Proffitt and Rick Quinn. Bronze Hammer donors are Joseph Hoover and Lou Hutchings. Please keep in mind that with out your dollars going to the PAC some of the National, State, County, and City regulations could have been more harmful to the building industry.
Some of the things your local SC Builders PAC has done for you include:

• Construction GL insurance- supported a bill that protects against faulty construction claims.
• Fire Sprinkler Bill- stopped the mandate of residential fire sprinklers
• Permit Extension Bill- Passed a bill that temporarily extends the term of permits.

Builder Ballot: June 26 is Primary Run Off Day, Please Vote

Today is the Runoff for the Primary Election in South Carolina. The top two candidates in races where a candidate did not receive at least 50 percent of the vote in their race are placed on a ballot today for the voters to make their final decision. The winners of all of the primary races will face off in the General Election on November 6.

In Greenville and Pickens counties, two races resulted in runoffs: Senate District 8 and Pickens County Sheriff. In Senate District 8, challengers Ross Turner and Joe Swann face off today to determine the Republican nominee for Senate District 8 currently held by Senator David Thomas. Senator Thomas failed to qualify for the runoff. His term in the Senate will end in December.

In Senate District 8, S.C. Builders PAC supports Ross Turner. Turner is an insurance broker and owner of The Turner Agency in Greenville. The Turner Agency is a member of the Home Builders Association of Greenville.

In Pickens County, incumbent Sheriff D. David Stone will face challenger Rick Clark.

Annual Chili Cook Off and Oyster Roast raises money for PAC

The annual Chili Cook Off and Oyster Roast helped raised needed money for S.C. Builders PAC this week.

This year's event was held in the Atrium and on the patio at the TD Convention Center.

S.C. Builders PAC is a cooperative Political Action Committee managed by the Home Builders Association of South Carolina.  Local HBAs throughout South Carolina raise funds for the PAC.  PAC funds are used to support candidates for public office who support housing and home building.  PAC contributions are voluntary. The association's Legislative Committee screens candidates for office and recommends contributions to the association's Board of Directors.  Candidates for statewide office are further screened by a Board of Trustees made up of representatives from each of the local HBAs across the state.

About the Chili Cook Off

The Annual Chili Cook Off is anticipated by members all year. HBA members and friends compete for the best chili, enjoy steamed oysters, an assortment of sides and desserts, and adult beverages.

The chili will be judged by attendees to the event for the winner of the coveted "People's Choice Award" for the best chili. Participants "purchase" votes on their favorite chili for $1 per vote, and all of the money will benefit the PAC. As they say in Chicago, vote early and often!

New this year will be the "Top Hot" award, judged by one of our local elected officials.

Elected officials from around the Upstate have been invited to attend.

First Annual Corn Hole Tournament

Also new this year will be the first annual Corn Hole Tournament. You know the game: toss a corn bag from 27 feet away into a small hole. Teams will enter to earn the top prize: The Corny! All entry fees will benefit the PAC.

Event Hosts and Presenters make it happen. Of course you can buy a ticket and attend. But consider doing more. Everything benefits the PAC.

Event Host: $250 includes 3 tickets to the event

Event Presenter: $500 includes 10 tickets to the event
